Are you at present fasting for health benefits? I know from experience when folks think of fasting they usually think about hunger. Fasting isn’t anything we voluntarily do because food is so plentiful and who would really wantto give up all the delectable delicacies that are available to us? It takes a lot for someone to just simply say “I desire to give up food today” because we have been taught we need 4 things in this life to survive. Those 4 things are oxygen, h2o, shelter, and of course food! So, it makes it very hard to change our mindset to give up food in order to realize the incredible health benefits it gives you. But…was it always like that?
Many years ago, our ancestors and forefathers frequently fasted just because they had to as they did not have food markets where they could pick food off shelving units and place it into their shopping basket. It just wasn’t like that so whatever they partook in in most cases had to be captured or harvested and they could go for long periods of time without capturing or harvesting anything. See, if you had to hunt or gather your food you could fall into durations of time where you just cannot trap or find things to devour. It’s just how things go. I’ve experienced this myself where I’ve had the best intent of going out to catch fish and after fishing for four or five hrs on the fishing boat, all I’m left with are cans of empty bait and a tan. You just don’t catch fish sometimes but unlike my forefathers, I have the luxury of being able to walk into a market and purchase the fish I didn’t catch a fewhours ago. It just wasn’t like this for our predecessors so if they did not trap or pick anything to feed on they would have to abstain from food until they were able to finally find a meal. I would be willing to bet if you could take a picture of what they looked like back then, not any of them would be obese. You can’t say that at this present time, can you?
There is some awesome evidence as to why you may want to start starting a fast for health and wellness benefits and I thought I would write about some of them for you on this day. Most of these are scientific but some of them are things I’ve observed from my own real life experience with fasting on a frequent basis.
1. Decreased Insulin levels and decreased insulin sensitivity – Most men and women today have higher than normal insulin levels as a result of the increased amounts of sugar they are consuming. White sugar and modified corn syrup are in most foods today which was never heard of in earlier years. This is one of the greatest reasons why there is a high blood sugar outbreak in America because with the increasing amounts of sugar, the pancreas has to secrete more and more insulin to force blood sugar levels down. This usually results in insulin sensitivity which can turn into diabetes and weight problems. Abstaining from food helps stimulate the normalizing of insulin levels in the our bodies.
2.Increase in Growth Hormone Levels – Going on a fast helps to increase growth hormone levels. This is essential if you want to grow muscle, feel better and look youthful. It’s the healthy way to do it without using synthetic hormones.
3. Digestive System – Abstaining from food for brief periods of time gives your digestive system time off and can also eliminate flatulence and bloating in the body. It can also eliminate constipation.
4. Cleansing the Body – By going on a fast, you can clear the lymphatic system which will give you reinvigorated mental awareness and focus. This is one of the main reasons why abstaining from food has been connected to higher awareness.
5. Hypertension – Fasting is a great way to reduce hypertension.
6. Food addiction – Many people are addicted to foods in our world. We are inundated with food at social events, work, and everywhere else. Going on a fast is a great tool to help manage the natural tendency to eat for no reason. This has been a big help to me personally to avoid unnecessary eating when I’m not feeling hungry.
7. Reduction In Body Fat Levels and Weight – You can deliberately use going on a fast to drop body fat and get to the weight you desire.
8. Energy – Abstaining from food can give you more vigor! It may sound strange but I’ve experienced this myself when I’ve felt like I caught my second wind after starting a fast for an really short period of time.
9. Longevity – In recent studies, people who intermittent fast on a routine basis live longer.
Bonus – Reduction in Excess Weight – You can use starting a fast as a way to splurge on your eating. I recently used this during the Thanksgiving holiday as I didn’t eat for part of the day and when it was time to eat dinner, I ate what I wanted to without being concerned about adding any pounds!
Fasting for brief periods used to be considered a weird thing to do, but judging by the way our modern society appears today it can be considered the correct thing to do to take care of your health. Starting a fast has been sitting right under our noses for many years but no one ever looked at it as a way to boost health and energy. Most of the time the answers are simple but our community complicates them as a means to improve profit and keep people confused. Always keep things simple and one way to do it is to begin fasting for healthcare benefits.
